Teacher: Tanja Berlin
Class days: February 20-21, 2012 (Monday-Tuesday)
Style: Needlepoint
Skill level: Pineapple: All Levels, Rooster: Advanced
Kit fee: US $95.00
Student must choice one of the two projects. The instructor will be teaching both during class time.
In this two day class we will work either the Still Life or the Rooster.
We begin by sewing down felt and crochet cotton to pad the pineapple or the rooster. Over the top of the padding a variety of metal threads will be applied. The still life has grapes and cherries and leaves that are worked in Au Ver A Soie silk threads in satin stitch, stem stitch and Rhodes stitch. The Rooster has gold, silver and copper metal threads in its feathers to give the feathers vibrancy and dimension. The student will go home with the knowledge of how to work with wide variety of traditional metal threads to create a rich 3-dimensional piece.
Pineapple Design Size: Height: 4 ¾ inches (11 ¾ cm) Width: 4 ¾ inches (11 ¾ cm)
Rooster Design Size: Height: 5 ¼ inches (13 ¼ cm) Width: 4 inches (10 cm)
Student will Supply:
• A sharp pair of small embroidery scissors.
• An old pair of small embroidery scissors: For cutting metal threads. These should be 3 ½ inch embroidery scissors with fine points for precision cutting.
• A 10 inch by 10 inch stretcher bar embroidery frame (to pin a 12 inch by 12 inch piece of fabric onto) for the Still Life embroidery.
A 10 inch by 12 inch stretcher bar embroidery frame (to pin a 12 inch by 14 inch piece of fabric onto) for the Rooster embroidery.
A Stretcher bar frame is the preferred frame to work the embroidery in as it is quick to assemble and the fabric can be pulled very tight in the frame which is extremely important with this technique.
• A packet of brass thumb tacks to pin fabric to frame.
• A Mechanical HB pencil nib size 0.5 or 0.7 or a sharp HB pencil.
• Light and Magnifier. I recommend bringing a light with an extension cord and a magnifier to enable you to see the stitches clearly.
• Frame Stand: Optional
