Description:

Come and explore dyeing and painting techniques combined with counted and surface embroidery techniques as a needlework map emerges with all the detail found in antique maps: Old style lettering (including script and flourish) and coloring, a compass rose, meridian lines, a cartouche insert framing a mysterious island treasure, and a wonderful expanse of the North American coast line identifying some of the more infamous pirate venues. This class will explore a variety of dyeing, fabric painting, and inking techniques for making your work appear older. The final detail of the map includes fabric painting of the shoreline and cartouche as we explore contemporary techniques applied to old world inspiration! Students may customize their map with their favorite states, cities and nautical motifs. You do not need to have previous experience in dyeing or painting to enjoy these wonderfully creative coloring techniques! A companion journal accompanies this class for practice.
